What is mixing?
After the recording/composition session(s) are over, the mixing process starts.
Mixing is all about proper track levels, compression, side chaining, EQ, and editing the recording.
It should sound releasable when the mix is done
(but it's not ready yet)
What is mastering?
Mastering is the process that music is put through after mixing.
Once the mixing process has been completed, usually a different engineer receives the track for mastering.
They take the full frequency file and do overall EQ, compression, and limiting.
Other techniques can be used, but those are verging on the mixing stage.
